Why Hire a Doula?
A Birth Doula "mothers" the laboring mother. She sees birth as a key life-event, which will be remembered by the mother for the rest of her life. Those memories need to be filled with joy, excitement and a sense of strength and control. A doula understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of the woman in labor. She also understands how important it is for the father (or partner) to be involved in the labor and birth. She bonds with the mother and support person before the birth, so that they can work together as a team. A birth doula stays at the mother's side throughout labor and birth, providing undivided attention and support. During this time, the doula provides multiple suggestions for comfort, and an objective point-of-view, which helps the mother make important decisions for herself and her baby. The doula's role is to help bring a sense of calm and control to you and your partner. She acts in a non-medical capacity, and she does not replace the mother's partner or any of the clinical care providers.
Numerous clinical studies have found that a doula's presence at birth:
* Reduces length of labor, allowing for fewer complications.
* Reduces the C-Section rate by more than 50%.
* Significantly decreases the mother's need for pain medication.
* Increases the rate of satisfactory birth experiences.
* Decreases the rate of post-partum depression in mothers.
* In addition, babies are less likely to go to special care nurseries & more likely to breast-feed more easily.
